“Locos in a Different Light - 2016” Taking place within the great hall of the National Railway Museum in York, Locos in a Different Light aims to challenge students studying the fields of technical lighting, lighting design and associated practices. Having run for eight years, the event draws students from several different colleges. Tasked with visually transforming and enhancing the hall and locomotives within the museum, the students were provided with some of the latest lighting and control technology products, offered by Ambersphere Solutions and Pulsar. Pulsar’s LED UniBay – Once Again the Fixture of Choice

“Pulsar’s outstanding LED UniBay product is once again the fixture of choice for a large-scale fast-track warehouse and logistics development.” Mitesh Mistry - Genprise Delta Construction Co. W.L.L. was selected by the MEP and Structural Consultant to put forward a lighting solution for Schmidt Logistics.  The new warehouse unit consisted of 3 separate halls for a very high profile client in the Oil & Gas industry. The client stipulated that the selected products should be 100% European design and manufacture, with strict performance and reliability criteria. A key design criteria was to ensure adequate lighting levels between racks which were only 2 metres apart, creating narrow aisles, with a ceiling height in excess of 12 metres. Pulsar supplied a project spearheaded by the same Consultant, however there were requirements which had to be met along with a high level of competition from other manufacturers. Al Aujan Warehouses Wanted “British engineering and Innovation”

“I wanted to break the mould and show that a well-manufactured product, with the rich history of British engineering and innovation, would prove that LED technology has a place in the harshest of environments” Mr Neelakanta - CEO of Delta Construction Back in early 2014, Pulsar was invited to bid for a multi-functional warehouse project in Hidd - a largely industrial area on the north east coast of Bahrain. A warehouse in this location, being beside the sea, has several challenges, ranging from high winds and extremely dusty/sandy/salt air conditions, to external temperatures regularly exceed 45 degrees. The client - Al Aujan Group - were building a collection of warehouse units, and the civil, mechanical and electrical works were awarded to Delta Construction. Initial designs by a local consultant were based on using a 400W metal halide solution. Pulsar’s 130W Unibay was selected after a very detailed technical evaluation including testing on site. Kirkstall Bridge Clock Tower – Making Light of Time.

The clock tower at the heart of the development is created as a response to the industrial history of the area. The screen-printed glass cladding features images of industrial artefacts and processes specific to Kirkstall. Each visual component of the clock mechanism is created from photographs of surrounding industrial elements: the pendulum – a forge-made vehicle axle, the clock face – the original Thrift Stores clock. The clock tower itself is wrapped in an image of a woollen spool, reflecting the blanket making and textile fulling activities carried out nearby. JPLD were appointed by the Artist and creator of the tower, Kirsty Brooks, to develop a subtle lighting scheme which emphasized the elements described in the narrative while helping to establish the piece against a visually busy backdrop. LED Colour Mixing Explained  LEDs have had a long association with colour, from the advent of visible spectrum red LEDs in the early 1960’s to the ground breaking development of the blue LED by Shuji Nakamura. As soon as blue LEDs became commercially available, lighting manufacturers like Pulsar started to experiment with colour mixing, creating a vast palette of colours from a few carefully chosen light sources. Fast forward to the present day, and LED colour mixing has become the standard for architectural and stage lighting. So why are LEDs so effective at colour mixing? Most light sources produce a broad spectrum of light which has to be filtered out to make specific colours, whereas LEDs are very efficient at making precise specific colours directly from the source. Pulsar Fixtures Illuminate Defining Features – Warsaw, Poland

Cosmopolitan Twarda 4 is Warsaw’s premiere residential skyscraper (160 meters high, 44 storeys), in central Warsaw, Poland. It has 236 apartments, each with floor-to-ceiling windows which provide panoramic views of Warsaw. The building also has a commercial level at ground level, three floors of offices, and a recreation area at level 4 for residents. The tower was designed by architect Helmut Jahn, and developed by Tacit Investment. “To me, urban space is essential to architecture. All my buildings  respond to the existing urban space, while creating it with their arrangement and rhythm” says Helmut Jahn. As part of his design, the tower has a red ceiling above level 4, providing a key visual element from street level and for residents enjoying the recreation area. Pulsar provided a well designed lighting scheme for the red ceiling which took into account desired effect, viewing angles (pedestrians and residents), operating costs and maintenance costs. Top Five Advantages of LED Lighting Efficiency - We’ve all heard about the energy efficiency of LED lights, but what’s the real story? Compared with fluorescent and metal halide, well designed LED lights will typically use between half and one quarter of the power to achieve the same light output. Compared to halogen or tungsten, the savings are even greater. Whilst it’s true that light emitting diodes are fantastically efficient light sources, the light fixtures need to be properly designed to maximise this efficiency without damaging the LED itself and degrading its light output over time.
